Accomplishments

  • MAX STEINBOCK AWARD, 2006. This award is given to an individual in recognition of an oustanding journalistic effort that explores an issue of concern to working families with particular sensitivity and insight into the human spirit. The Steinbock Award is the only International Labor Communications Association Award that is given solely to an individual. Jon Melegrito received the award for his story about AFSCME workers who were victimized during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It also documented the heroism, service and sacrifice of city workers in New Orleans who responded to the call of duty.
  • 2018 AARP AAPI Hero Award. Jon Melegrito was recognized for his "tireless efforts since the founding of the Filipino Veterans Recognition and Education Project in 2014 to raise awareness about the Filipino WWII veterans struggle for equity and justice." He used his journalistic skills to write stories about Filipino Veterans, national events like the Bataan Memorial Death March and the Day of Valor, and efforts to influence legislation in Congress affecting Veterans benefits.
