Supporting Statement - Teaching Experience

I derive great pleasure from teaching and consider it a privilege to impart knowledge. My teaching experience includes both traditional classroom settings and hands-on learning opportunities that foster practical engagement. I employ an interactive teaching approach that emphasizes hands-on experience and self-discovery, aiming to transition away from a passive student-teacher dynamic and adopt a self-guided learning approach where I serve as a facilitator. I incorporate methods that encourage active interaction, deep thought, and exploration of topics. My primary objectives are to cultivate critical thinking, foster curiosity, and encourage continuous questioning, helping students discover their interests and passions within a specific subject area. I empower students to develop confidence in handling complex material and seek solutions effectively. A supportive learning environment is crucial, ensuring all students feel included and supported both in the classroom and during dedicated office hours. I acknowledge diverse learning styles and tailor my teaching methods to appeal to various preferences. I also ask students to outline their specific learning requirements to plan the classroom environment effectively. I have developed ongoing skill-based assessments for Reasoning, Speaking, Listening, Organization, Participation, and Writing. These assessments include revision and reflection periods. I’m committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, actively listening and pursuing professional development in this area. I am community focused. In The Bahamas, I invited local fishermen to participate in classroom teaching and fieldwork for a fisheries class. They also attended the research symposium as key team members. These initiatives enhance learning and promote inclusivity by involving local communities in teaching and research.
