Registered Nurse with critical care and emergency department experience in a float pool role, specializing in the management of high-acuity patients with complex medical and psychiatric needs. Skilled in crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, de-escalation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Demonstrates strong leadership as a charge nurse and a commitment to trauma-informed, patient-centered care. Currently pursuing Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner training with a focus on expanding expertise in mental health assessment and treatment.
My experience as a registered nurse in the emergency department and intensive care unit float pool has shaped not only my clinical expertise, but also my professional purpose. Working in high-acuity environments across a large, urban healthcare system has exposed me to the critical intersection between medical illness and mental health. Time and again, I have cared for patients whose psychiatric conditions—whether untreated, undertreated, or exacerbated by social determinants of health—were the driving force behind their presentation. These experiences have inspired my pursuit of becoming a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
In my current role, I provide care for diverse patient populations, frequently managing individuals in acute psychiatric crisis, including those experiencing suicidal ideation, psychosis, severe anxiety, and substance withdrawal. I have developed strong skills in rapid assessment, crisis intervention, and therapeutic communication, often serving as a stabilizing presence for patients during their most vulnerable moments. I routinely collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and crisis teams to facilitate evaluations and safe dispositions, particularly for patients who board in the emergency department awaiting psychiatric placement. These prolonged encounters have given me a deeper understanding of the gaps in mental health access and continuity of care.
Serving as a charge nurse has further strengthened my leadership abilities and reinforced my commitment to patient advocacy. In this role, I coordinate care in a fast-paced, high-volume emergency department while supporting staff in managing complex behavioral health cases. I have become adept at balancing operational demands with compassionate, patient-centered care, particularly when addressing the safety needs of patients experiencing behavioral crises. These experiences have highlighted the importance of strong clinical judgment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and systems-level thinking—skills I am eager to expand upon as an advanced practice provider.
My interest in psychiatric nursing extends beyond acute stabilization. I am deeply motivated to understand the underlying neurobiological and psychosocial factors that contribute to mental illness and to provide longitudinal, evidence-based care that promotes recovery and resilience. I am particularly interested in improving access to mental health services in underserved communities, where stigma, limited resources, and systemic barriers often delay treatment until crisis occurs.
Pursuing the PMHNP role will allow me to integrate my critical care foundation with advanced psychiatric knowledge to deliver holistic, patient-centered care. I am committed to developing expertise in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and diagnostic reasoning to better serve individuals across the lifespan. My goal is to not only treat acute symptoms but to build therapeutic relationships that empower patients and improve long-term outcomes.
I am confident that my clinical experience, leadership skills, and dedication to mental health advocacy have prepared me for the rigor of graduate study. I am eager to contribute to and grow within a PMHNP program that values excellence, compassion, and service. Ultimately, I aspire to be a provider who not only addresses psychiatric illness but also advances equitable and accessible mental healthcare for all.
